Etsu Izakaya stands out for their curated set menus and hands-on planning help, making your dining experience smooth from start to finish. Right near Mermaid Beach, they really capture the lively vibe of Japanese shared dining.

The atmosphere is buzzing, and the food truly delivers. We got to chat with a guest who sat at the bar, and they couldn’t stop raving about the crispy rice with scallop.

They also recommended the wagyu sando and the spicy tuna hand roll. If you’re hungry for veggie options, you can try the tempura Brussels sprouts or the classic agedashi tofu.

However, keep in mind that early bookings like 4:30 or 5:00 PM only give you 1.5 hours to eat, so it might feel a little rushed if you want to hang out longer.

Pros

  • Curated set menus
  • Extensive raw bar
  • Dedicated event planning
  • Fresh local seafood

Cons

  • Strict 1.5-hour early booking limit; might feel rushed

We will definitely be back

We just experienced the best Japanese food we have ever tasted. There were absolutely no complaints. The food, atmosphere and most importantly, the service were impeccable.

Amazing cocktails and mocktails that you can tell were very well thought out.

We chose the set menu with the wagyu beef and raw fish that absolutely melted in our mouth.

What a way to spend our last night in the Gold Coast, we will definitely be back! Worth every penny

Best Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to

Food? Fantastic. Service? Even better. We devoured every bite so fast that all I have are pics of empty plates! This place is a flavor explosion – once you start, you can’t stop. Don’t forget dessert. Highly recommend! Best Japanese restaurant Ive ever been to. Highlight of the night, believe it or not, was the rice! Can’t believe rice balls could be so tasty! Thank you!!!

2. Yamagen Japanese Restaurant

Website: https://www.yamagen.com.au/

Address: 7 Staghorn Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Contact: 07 5584 1266

Hours: Friday Lunch, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Monday-Sunday, 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM

Yamagen in Surfers Paradise is where classic Japanese cooking meets cool modern twists, all built around a specialty robata grill. The menu is full of bold flavors and stylish presentations, so there’s always something new to try.

One group we talked to couldn’t get enough of the spicy Queensland spanner crab and the rich truffle wagyu tartare. The dry-aged duck breast and crispy pork belly were big favorites too.

If you’re sharing, don’t miss the tempura whitebait. The restaurant also has a huge range of Japanese whisky if you want to level up your meal.

The only real downside is if you’ve got a group of eight or more, everyone has to pick the omakase set menu instead of ordering lots of small dishes. This can feel a little restrictive for more casual catch-ups.

Pros

  • Modern robata grill
  • Huge whisky collection
  • Creative modern flavors
  • Premium sashimi tacos

Cons

  • Omakase required for groups of eight or more

The food is absolutely next level

Come for the wagyu tartare and stay for the thinly sliced snapper!

A beautiful restaurant with amazing staff.

The food is absolutely next level. I’ve managed to eat at most of Australia’s best Japanese restaurants and these guys just take it to another level.

Try and pick from the menu as the set menus might not work to your flavor and make sure to have a cocktail.

The best Japanese food we’ve ever tasted

Wow. This is the best Japanese food we’ve ever tasted. Kingfish sashimi and aged duck were crazy good. Wonderful, attentive staff and beautifully balanced wines made our night perfect. Big thanks to Ryden who looked after us

The kitchen team has great skill, with experience from some leading Asian restaurants. The food mixes classic comfort with beautiful presentation.

One client we spoke to tried the miso eggplant and said it literally melted in their mouth. Other must-tries are kingfish carpaccio and the fresh softshell crab salad.

If you want something heartier, customers love the beef cheek katsu and the black cod miso.

Sadly, the place shuts down completely on Mondays, so you’ll have to plan your visit for another day of the week.

Fresh, high-quality food with exceptional flavours

This was the best meal and dining experience we had during our stay in the Gold Coast! Fresh, high quality food with exceptional flavours and the service was great. Pictured: 1. Oysters / Lychee martini   2. Kingfish carpaccio 3. Tuna 4. Scallops

An exciting approach to Japanese cuisine

Tucked away In Burleigh, Masu Izakaya is an exciting approach on Japanese cuisine.

The oyster ikura ponzu, kingfish, wagu gyoza, black Cod and miso eggplant are must haves. Cocktails and selection of Sake’s match well. Get a few rounds of “hakutsuru” while you’re at it

Highly recommend this place for both the food and the experience

We had such an amazing time at Misono! The show was incredibly entertaining and kept us smiling throughout the meal. As for the food—the Wagyu, lobster, and shrimp were exceptionally tender and flavorful. Also, you cannot miss the fried rice; it was hands down the best! Highly recommend this place for both the food and the experience.

Food and wine were first class

A magnificent Japanese Restaurant situation on the 3rd floor of the Marriott Hotel at Surfers Paradise. Our booking was made through First Table.  We partook in the teppanyaki style meal which was brilliant. We each had the Cherry Blossom course from the menu.   We highly recommend this Restaurant.   Food and wine were first class and our Chef, Romeo, was brilliant and engaging whilst preparing us a delicious banquet of teppanyaki food.

Anekawa stands out for their authentic Japanese cooking methods and a menu that changes with the seasons, making the most of local produce. They’re all about fine dining here, where each dish is crafted with total respect for quality ingredients.

The flame-tail snapper sashimi and the chargrilled wagyu scotch filet steak are both amazing, while the cozy chawan mushi pairs perfectly with rich potato mochi.

Add the warm clay pot rice, and you’ve got a meal that easily ranks among the best in the city.

But it’s worth noting that the restaurant is closed two days a week, so reserving a spot for the weekend can get competitive. It’s worth planning if you want a table.

Pros

  • Rotating seasonal menu
  • Intimate fine dining
  • Bio-dynamic wine pairings
  • Premium local seafood

Cons

  • Closed two days weekly

We tried lots of items on the menu and found everything delicious

This is such a wonderful and cosy Japanese restaurant!

We tried lots of items on the menu and found everything delicious. The steak, potato mochi, sashimi and desserts were phenomenal. The restaurant is really intimate and beautifully decorated. The staff were super knowledgeable and gave great food recommendations. We will be back!

All the dishes were exquisite

Cute authentic Japanese restaurant with beautiful food! We had the omakase and all the dishes were exquisite! We swapped out the oysters and got another raw dish instead. My favourite was the chawanmushi! It was so delicious with the pops of corn and roe. The gotofu was such an interesting dish, I’ve never had anything like it and I enjoyed it a lot. The textures of the chewy tofu and crunchy granola was excellent. The omakase was pescatarian. Overall a very enjoyable experience!
